Numbers in the abstract are just that — numbers. But relying on the numbers in a financial report are livelihoods, interests and ultimately, stories of investors (Arthur Levitt, former SEC Chairman)

Do you love numbers and do you work well with people? More and more, accountants are called upon to develop business plans and analyze the performance of companies. This means that we not only focus on the numbers that drive the business, but must communicate what these numbers mean and how they can be improved. Accountants are no longer in the back office of the business but out front advising on financial systems and forecasts as well as interpreting and auditing the financial statements.

In Indonesia, the accounting profession faces a shortage of quality accountant. In public accountant area for instance, we have aging problem where more than 60% public accountants are in the age of over 50. In tax industry, we need more and more tax accountant and consultant as tax reform continues. As in the compliance industry, more stringent rules from regulator and authorities will make the auditor profession still in high-demand. Looking at in the global perspective, as International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) has been adopted in more than 100 countries, accountant with knowledge in IFRS will gain a lot of advantages over others who does not.
